An Introduction to Tafsir al. wasit by Dr. Wahbah al. Zuhayli: Its Style and Methodology

Abstract

This research article examines the methodology and style of Al. Tafsir al. Wasit by the renowned contemporary scholar and Qur’anic exegete Dr. Wahbah al-Zuhayli۔ The study highlights the distinctive features of this tafsīr, which successfully integrates classical principles of Qur’anic exegesis with a modern, clear, and accessible style. Relying primarily on tafsir bil ma thur the work also incorporates linguistic analysis, Arabic grammar, rhetoric, jurisprudential discussions, and established exegetical and legal principles. The article demonstrates how Dr. al-Zuhayli carefully evaluates narrations by indicating their authenticity, avoids Isra Iliyyat, presents preferred scholarly opinions, and refutes deviant sectarian doctrines with balanced reasoning. Furthermore, the tafsīr addresses juristic disagreements in a non-partisan manner and explains difficult vocabulary for ease of understanding. The study concludes that, Al. Tafsir al. Wasit represents a comprehensive, moderate, and academically sound contribution to contemporary Qur’anic studies, offering both intellectual depth and practical guidance for readers.
