The Future of Media Regulation in Pakistan: The Need for Reforms in Light of Islamic Ethical Principles
Abstract
The fundamental purpose of Islamic media is not to merely entertain or attract audiences through sensational visuals, but to positively influence human intellect and behavior in accordance with moral and ethical values. Islamic media emphasizes the preservation of modesty, the avoidance of content that provokes lust or moral corruption, and the promotion of higher objectives such as inviting humanity towards Allah, upholding divine principles, strengthening moral consciousness, and intellectually responding to misconceptions raised against Islam.
As an Islamic state, Pakistan bears a significant responsibility to ensure that its media system functions as a tool for cultural preservation, moral education, and social reform. Despite this responsibility, the current media regulatory framework in Pakistan remains largely ineffective in aligning media practices with Islamic ethical principles. The widespread dissemination of unethical, sensational, and morally questionable content has negatively influenced societal values, particularly affecting the moral development and social behavior of youth.
This article highlights the pressing need for reform in Pakistani media regulations in light of Islamic moral and ethical teachings. It argues that media laws and regulatory mechanisms must be strengthened to prevent the spread of immoral content and to guide media platforms toward fulfilling their social and ethical responsibilities. By integrating Islamic ethical values into media regulation, Pakistani media can play a constructive role in promoting moral integrity, social harmony, cultural identity, and positive education, thereby contributing to the overall welfare and stability of society.
