The contributions of Al-khalil Ibn Ahmad Al-Farahidi in the growth of the Arabic Language and Literature

Abstract

Al-Khalil ibn Ahmad al-Farahidi (d. 791 CE) is widely regarded as one of the founding figures of Arabic linguistics, whose pioneering efforts transformed Arabic from a primarily oral tradition into a structured and systematic scientific discipline. His most celebrated work, Kitab al-Ayn, is recognized as the first comprehensive Arabic dictionary, distinguished by its innovative phonetic arrangement based on the points of articulation of letters. This method reflected his deep understanding of phonetics and laid the groundwork for later linguistic studies.

In addition to lexicography, al-Farahidi made groundbreaking contributions to Arabic prosody through the development of Ilm al-Arud (the science of poetic meter). He systematically classified the rhythms and meters of Arabic poetry, ensuring its preservation and enabling scholars to analyze poetic structures with precision. His work also extended to grammar, phonology, and the refinement of diacritical marks, which played a crucial role in the accurate reading and interpretation of the Qur’an.

Al-Farahidi’s intellectual legacy was further advanced by his student Sibawayh (d. 799 CE), who built upon his teacher’s foundational ideas to formalize Arabic grammar. Together, their contributions continue to influence modern linguistics, Arabic language studies, and even contemporary computational approaches to language analysis.
