Abstract

This article presents a critical analysis of the concepts of resistance, revolution, and human freedom in the poetry of Faiz Ahmed Faiz, one of the most influential voices in Urdu literature. Through a close examination of Faiz's selected poems and ghazals, the study explores how these three interconnected concepts form the ideological and aesthetic foundation of his poetic vision. The analysis reveals that Faiz transformed resistance from mere political sloganeering into a profound moral and aesthetic force rooted in human love and compassion, refusing the language of violence and revenge. Revolution in Faiz's poetry operates on two parallel levels, the political and social transformation of oppressive structures alongside the internal and spiritual transformation of human consciousness, with love serving as the essential catalyst for both. The study further demonstrates how Faiz conceived human freedom not merely as political emancipation but as a comprehensive condition encompassing social, economic, and spiritual dimensions of liberation. The imagery of the prison emerges as Faiz's most powerful symbol, representing not only physical incarceration but all systems that deprive human beings of their fundamental dignity and autonomy. The creative tension between slavery and freedom, despair and hope, constitutes the distinctive aesthetic quality that elevates Faiz's poetry above conventional resistance literature and grants it enduring universal relevance across temporal and geographical boundaries.
