Romantic Tendencies in the Short Stories of Majnun Gorakhpuri

Abstract

Majnun Gorakhpuri is regarded as one of the important short story writers of Urdu literature whose fiction reflects a remarkable blend of romantic sensibility, aesthetic consciousness, psychological insight, and social realism. This research article presents an analytical study of romantic trends in the short stories of Majnun Gorakhpuri. The primary objective of the study is to examine the various manifestations of beauty, love, romance, imagination, emotional attachment, natural beauty, and inner psychological states in his short stories. The study reveals that romance in Majnun Gorakhpuri’s fiction is not merely confined to stories of love and beauty or to an imaginary world; rather, it is deeply connected with the human psyche, psychological conflict, deprivation, failure, loneliness, and social realities. The study further demonstrates that Majnun Gorakhpuri’s romantic sensibility underwent intellectual and thematic transformation over time. In short stories such as Saman Push, Sabz Pari, Tum Mere Ho, Khwab-o-Khayal, The Stranger, and Sarab, elements of love, beauty, imagination, and emotional intensity are accompanied by human sympathy, truthfulness, public service, and social consciousness. His fictional style is characterized by poetic delicacy, aesthetic refinement, simple and spontaneous dialogue, and the use of references and allusions from Urdu and Persian poetry, which further intensify the romantic atmosphere of his stories. Thus, Majnun Gorakhpuri’s romanticism assumes a balanced, serious, and psychological form in which the emotional experiences of the individual and the realities of society are closely interconnected.
