A Critical Study of the Training Methodology and Approach of the Shadhiliyya Masters
Abstract
The training methodology of the Shadhiliyya Order is a comprehensive, balanced, and moderate system grounded in the teachings of the Qur’an and Sunnah. It does not separate Shariah, Tariqah, and Haqiqah; rather, it regards them as interconnected stages of a single spiritual journey. According to the Shadhili masters, Shariah is the foundation of spiritual progress, Tariqah its practical expression, and Haqiqah its spiritual fruit. Therefore, they reject any form of Sufism that contradicts or separates itself from Shariah. The primary objective of spiritual training in the Shadhiliyya tradition is not the attainment of miracles, spiritual visions, or supernatural experiences, but the development of firm faith, inner tranquility, and purification of the soul, spiritual reform, good character, and closeness to Allah. For this purpose, practices such as remembrance of Allah (dhikr), spiritual struggle (mujahadah), seclusion (khalwah), withdrawal (uzlah), and self-accountability (muhasabah) are employed as means of spiritual development, while remaining strictly subject to Shariah and the Sunnah. The Shadhili approach places equal emphasis on the purification of both the outward and inward aspects of human life. Alongside outward acts of worship, inward virtues such as sincerity, divine love, and reliance upon Allah, fear, hope, and knowledge of Allah are given fundamental importance. Any spiritual state, vision, or claim is evaluated according to conformity with Shariah and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.Thus, the Shadhiliyya training methodology presents an integrated system that harmonizes knowledge and practice, Shariah and spiritual reality, outward and inward reform, and Islamic jurisprudence and Sufism.
