Muhammad Manzoor Ahmad Manzoor Desvi: An Obscure Poet of Hyderabad

Abstract

Muhammad Manzoor Ahmad Manzoor Desvi hailed from Deesa, Palanpur, and Gujarat, India. By profession, he was a teacher and a journalist writing in the Gujarati language. He possessed considerable proficiency in Gujarati, Sanskrit, Hindi, Urdu, Persian, and Arabic. Associated with the All-India Muslim League, he served as the secretary of its local chapter and actively participated in the Pakistan Movement. Manzoor Desvi composed poetry in Gujarati, Hindi, Persian, and Urdu. His writings include Khandani Shajrah (Family Genealogy), memoirs relating to his family, and "Inqilab Inqilab", his sole collection of Urdu poetry, comprising poems. Published posthumously in Hyderabad, Sindh, by his son, Mukhtar Ahmad Sheikh Desvi, the collection appears to be scarce, if not entirely rare.Despite its significance, Inqilab Inqilab does not appear to have received adequate attention in discussions of the literary history of Hyderabad. Manzoor Desvi himself remains largely unfamiliar to the city's literary circles. His apparent absence from literary gatherings and mushairas may have contributed to his limited recognition as a poet. A search of biographical and anthological accounts of Hyderabad's poets has likewise yielded no reference to his name. It is through the discovery of this collection that his literary identity has come to light. The collection was published in Karachi in 1995. According to the publisher's foreword, prominent figures in academic, literary, and research circles, including Dr. Ghulam Mustafa Khan, Dr. Najm-ul-Islam, and Dr. Ahmad Hussain Ahmar Rifa‘i, were acquainted with Manzoor Ahmad Desvi as a poet.The rediscovery of Manzoor Ahmad Manzoor Desvi as a poet provides a valuable lead to a hitherto overlooked link in the literary tradition of Hyderabad, Sindh. The availability and critical examination of his poetry collection may contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the city's poetic heritage and facilitate the inclusion of a relatively obscure literary figure in its documented literary history.
