Strengthening the Blue Economy through Sustainable Coastal Tourism: Policy Recommendations for Coastal Balochistan

Abstract

The Blue Economy has become a strategic formula for sustainable economic development through sustainable use of marine and coastal resources. In this context, sustainable coastal tourism offers great opportunities for economic development, environmental conservation and social inclusion. However, it has not been able to exploit its tourism potential in full due to weak governance, inadequate infrastructure, environmental degradation, and limited community participation. This paper uses a qualitative policy analysis to review academic literature, policy papers and institutional reports to analyze the contribution of sustainable coastal tourism for the development of the Blue Economy in Coastal Baluchistan. The study reviews the recent academic publications, institutional reports, and policy documents to identify the economic, environmental, socio-cultural, and institutional factors affecting sustainable tourism development. The findings show that sustainable coastal tourism can generate employment opportunities, diversify local economies, attract investors, and improve the quality life of the communities, while contributing to the conservation of the marine ecosystems. However, the literature also points out persistent challenges such as marine pollution, unplanned coastal development, deficient waste management, weak environmental regulations and limited stakeholder coordination that undermine the long-term sustainability of tourism. The recommendations are practical in nature and are aimed at policymakers and development practitioners who wish to be harness sustainable coastal tourism as a driver to improve Pakistan’s Blue Economy and safeguard its coastal and marine resources in the long term.
