WOMEN'S AUTONOMY AND GENDER EQUALITY
Abstract
Women's autonomy and gender equality are widely discussed topics in contemporary discourse. From an Islamic perspective, these concepts are deeply rooted in the teachings of the Qur'an and the Sunnah, which emphasize justice, dignity, and equal opportunities for all individuals, regardless of gender. Islam grants women rights concerning education, economic independence, and participation in public life, establishing a framework for personal autonomy and societal involvement. The historical contributions of Muslim women in fields such as scholarship, commerce, and politics illustrate the practical application of these teachings. However, cultural practices and patriarchal interpretations in certain societies have contributed to gender disparities that diverge from Islam's foundational principles. This paper explores the concept of women's autonomy in Islam, highlighting how Islamic jurisprudence and ethical values support gender equality while addressing common misconceptions. The study concludes that promoting gender equality in Muslim societies requires returning to Islam's authentic teachings and fostering an environment where women's rights are respected and upheld.
