Abstract

The treatment of minorities in Islam is grounded in the core principles of justice, equality, and compassion as outlined in the Quran and the Sunnah (the teachings and practices of the Prophet Muhammad, PBUH). This study explores the rights of minorities in Islam, particularly focusing on the historical context of the early Islamic state and the practical application of these rights during the Prophet’s life and the subsequent caliphates. Islam recognizes the rights of minorities, emphasizing their protection in society through various legal, social, and economic measures. The Quran speaks to the equality of all human beings regardless of race, ethnicity, or religion, stating that all people are created by God and deserve dignity and respect. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) provided the most notable example by fostering peaceful coexistence with non-Muslims, ensuring their rights were safeguarded. His interactions with religious minorities, such as Jews and Christians, are often cited as examples of tolerance and respect. One of the most significant documents in this regard is the Constitution of Medina, which guaranteed religious freedom and protection for Jews and other non-Muslim tribes living in the city. The subsequent caliphates, particularly during the Rashidun era, continued this tradition, granting religious minorities the right to practice their faith, own property, and be treated with respect under Islamic rule. The historical evidence and examples from Islamic governance show how religious minorities were integrated into the political and social fabric of the Muslim community. This article aims to shed light on the Islamic approach to minority rights, illustrating its historical roots, the legal framework for protection, and the ethical obligations of the Muslim state. The study also examines how these principles can inform contemporary discussions on minority rights in Islamic societies.
