Abstract

This research paper presents an extensive discussion of rational arguments based on Quran to oppose atheism (ilhad) and how it can be used in the modern context. The paper follows the historical evolution of atheism since the materialist leanings of ancient Greek, Indian, and Chinese thought to its current explosion by Western thought, the scientific revolution, and the emergence of New Atheism. It examines some of the modern contributors to atheism such as scientific materialism, secularism, intellectual anarchy in the media, and the innumerable effect on the young generation, which results in moral confusion, nihilism, and spiritual depletion. Quran is given as an eternal and versatile source of rational disproving atheistic objections. It uses the argument of the making of the universe, the beauty and wisdom visible in the physical world and the human nature (fitrah) and conscience to prove the existence of a purposeful Creator. The article points out the Quranic style of dialogue, which was full of wisdom, mild persuasion, examples of parables, and respectful interaction, to be a better example of treating atheist doubt. It also examines the works of early Muslim theologians (mutakallimun), the annihilating attack of Imam al-Ghazali on philosophical atheism, and the activity of modern Muslim philosophers who unite Quranic arguments with modern science and philosophy. The results prove that atheism is not a scientific conclusion but a result of intellectual errors, disregard of evidence of god and moral decay. The arguments of the Quran are also incredibly topical and are consistent with the findings of modern science (e.g. cosmic expansion, embryology, fine-tuning of natural laws) and offer straightforward and sensible answers to the atheist arguments of our time. Some of the practical suggestions are the need to incorporate Quranical rational evidences into the school curriculums, use of social media to engage in wisdom and evidence-based discussions, training of scholars to understand the modern practicum of apologetics, and promoting the awareness of fitrah and conscience at the family and community levels. Finally, according to the article, the Quran provides a total intellectual and spiritual remedy to atheism. Through proactive use of its logical appeals in education, media, and popular language, the Muslim societies can foster intellectual strength, save the faith of the new generation, and make an effective appeal in defense of tawhid in the new world. The research is a good theoretical base and practical information on how to combat atheism in the 21 st century.
