A Study of the Prophetic Traditions Related to Purification and Ablution in Musannaf Abd al-Razzaq: An Analytical Review and Contemporary Applications
Abstract
Purification (Taharah) and ablution (Wudu) are fundamental aspects of Islamic worship, and the observance of ritual purity is obligatory before performing prayer. The concept of purification is not limited to physical cleanliness; rather, it also encompasses spiritual purification and inner tranquility. In Islam, purification has been described as half of faith, highlighting its extraordinary significance. Ablution is a sacred act of purification that is not only a prerequisite for the validity of certain acts of worship but also offers significant benefits for human health. According to modern scientific research, the washing of various parts of the body during ablution promotes personal hygiene and cleanliness, which may contribute to the prevention of certain diseases.
The traditions concerning ablution recorded in the blessed life of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) provide a practical model for the Muslim Ummah. The Prophet’s method of performing ablution was comprehensive, simple, and systematic, emphasizing the proper washing of the prescribed body parts and adherence to the required sequence. Although different juristic opinions exist regarding certain practices, such as wiping the head and ears, washing the feet, and wiping over foot coverings, all major schools of Islamic jurisprudence acknowledge the fundamental authority of the Prophet’s practical example.
In the contemporary era, there is a growing need for a more comprehensive understanding of the principles of purification and ablution. Due to the demands of modern lifestyles, individuals may sometimes neglect certain essential requirements of ablution. Therefore, this chapter aims to critically examine the Prophetic traditions related to purification and ablution, particularly those recorded in Musannaf Abd al-Razzaq, and explore their contemporary applications. The study seeks to highlight the practical relevance of these traditions in modern life and promote greater awareness of the religious, spiritual, and hygienic dimensions of purification and ablution.
